smarties.co case study: offline learning games

Short learning games for children aged five to ten that a parent can hand over on an iPad without adverts, accounts or in-app purchases. The games had to load instantly, keep working with no connection, and the public pages had to rank for what parents search.

A free learning-games app: 76 games, 11 subjects, works offline, no adverts.

What we built

  • Public pages as static HTML and CSS with about 6 KB of JavaScript in total; no framework, no build step to break
  • The game itself lives at /play/ as an installable app with a service worker, so it opens full screen from the iPad home screen and works offline
  • 76 short games across 11 subjects, each round five to eight items, with progress saved in the browser; no account, no adverts, nothing for sale
  • Full Polish version under /pl/ with translated games, guides and worksheets: 345 URLs in one flat sitemap, linked with hreflang
  • Ten printable worksheet pages, five parent guides, and a whiteboard mode for teachers at the front of a classroom
  • Analytics only after consent: Consent Mode set to denied first and the tag not fetched until a parent says yes; the game pages stay unmeasured on purpose

What we would do next

Add more games in the subjects with the fewest, keep the parent guides growing from real questions, and watch which pages parents land on before adding anything else.
